The Sixties started with this long runner on the Billboard charts. It entered the Billboard charts January 11 1960, moved from #96 to #43 on January 18, and reached #1 on February 22. It stayed on the number one position for nine weeks, and on the Billboard hot 100 for a total of 21 weeks. The single became the most popular during the sixties, and still hold a high rank on the list of songs that had most weeks on Billboards #1.

Nominated for several Grammy Awards, and winning a Grammy for best record that year.

It reached #2 on the British charts (march 1960).
